Working together

Independent by design. Collaborative by nature.

Toward Labs is built around Jamye's experience and expertise, while recognising that complex challenges frequently benefit from complementary perspectives and specialist capabilities.

Through an extensive professional network developed across Australia and internationally — spanning government, infrastructure, technology, academia and professional services — Toward Labs can bring together experienced advisers and collaborators where the needs of an engagement warrant a broader team.

This provides the flexibility to work on focused individual assignments or more complex multidisciplinary engagements, while maintaining a personal, senior-level approach and direct accountability.

A little history. A sense of direction.

There's a reason lighthouses and maps feature in the Toward Labs identity.

Long before GPS and digital navigation, lighthouses helped people find their way, avoid danger and navigate unfamiliar waters. They remain an enduring example of critical infrastructure — combining practical purpose with remarkable ingenuity and engineering.

John Smeaton's Eddystone Lighthouse, completed in 1759, helped pioneer new approaches to construction at sea. Robert Stevenson built on this tradition with Scotland's celebrated Bell Rock Lighthouse in 1811, followed a year later by Toward Point Lighthouse.

But the Stevenson story is more than one of engineering. It was a remarkable family endeavour, bringing together design, invention, construction, illustration and enterprise across generations. Robert and his wife Jean raised a family whose lives became closely intertwined with the lighthouse business. Their daughter Jane contributed to the illustration and documentation of Robert's work and played an important role in organising and preserving the firm's engineering knowledge. Three of their sons — Alan, David and Thomas — subsequently joined and extended the family enterprise, establishing an extraordinary legacy of engineering innovation in Scotland and internationally.

For Toward Labs, the connection is part historical curiosity, part metaphor. Maps help us see the bigger picture. Lighthouses help us find our bearings. And the Stevenson family story reminds us of what can be achieved when ingenuity, different disciplines and practical experience come together — sometimes in extraordinarily difficult conditions.
